Does anyone know the reputation of streamline.net web hosting?

I have had too much of a problem with them. i have been sending them the mysql error that i get 3 times in a day, and they are not able to help. they only say that, their servers are perfectly fine. I just checked the IP to COUNTRY conversion, and their mysql servers are in South Africa.

To do web hosting as a business you need a high-speed connection (generally a T1), a computer with a big hard disk (or more likely a bunch of such machines) running webserver software (Apache on Linux or IIS on Windows), a reliable backup system, and enough knowhow to do support, to keep things running, and to help your customers.

Web developing is much simpler -- you need web design, development, graphic design, and programming knowhow, but you can do the work on a plain old home machine with a DSL (or even dial-up) connection. You go to a hosting service (there are thousands of them) for the actual web space.

Many hosting companies do web development on the side, but most web designers don't do hosting.

Time, Intelligence, Awareness of the competition, Money, Good hardware, Good software, Good connection speeds, Knowledge of HTML / CSS / ASP / PHP / Javascript would be helpful, an understanding of DNS and Apache or IIS would be a must, plus a whole list of other things.

Sure you can explain it in a little box. I taught a guy how to perform surgery on himself in a little box just like this one.

Web Design: just use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) and the web design is easy. Yahoo has a free product. Web hosting is easy to come by. Depending on what you need, you can use the free web hosting that yahoo or google offers. If you need something a little more professional, you can find a host that charges $15--$30 a month. You can email liquidarchiteks@gmail for some reasonable rates. Domain registration is probably cheapest at godaddy.com. for around $8 you can reserve a domain name for a year. Internet connection is probably best provided by your phone or cable company. DSL and Cable offer good speeds. Verizon has the new Fios fiber optic plan that is sickeningly fast.

Reply:I've looked around. I really like GoDaddy.com. I used a company called Melbourne IT for a while, but GoDaddy is located here in the states and has really really good customer support. They also have software called Website Tonight that allows you to make a website pretty easily. Check em out, but don't pay more than like $15 bucks a month on a website.

Web design is essentially programming. It is a code that puts graphics onto a web page. It can be simplified by using software that does the coding for you- all you do is design what the pages look like on the software then publish it to your website.

Internet connection is simply how you are connected to the Internet. There are 2 types- static and roaming.

Static means your I.P address doesn't change and you need this to host a website.

Roaming means that every time you connect to the Internet through your I.S.P you are given a different I.P address.

every company that has a well-managed website has a "contact us" or so option on their website's homepage. go to your web-hosting company's website, they must be having a similar option about contacting them. look for their company's e-mail address. once you have it, simply e-mail them asking about their server.

There's no such thing like free host and domain, BUT you can use a redirect. First host your site on freewebs or any other one. Then go to this site: http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ register for the domain redirect. then it's www.yourname.co.nr anyone who goes to that will be redirected to your site, but they won't be able to see like blah.freewebs.com. I use that redirect and it works fine as a charm. Hope it helps.
Reply:There is so such thing as a company giving out free domain names. And if there was such a company, it had already filed for bankruptcy due to the 1000+ other people wanting a free domain.

You can find free domain hosting though, but it might carry restrictions, and it'll only be temporary.

Honestly, if you can't buy a domain, just settle on a free server, I did fine on Geocities and Freewebs until I bought my own domain.

A web host is a company that provides storage space for your website - in effect you're renting a bit of their computer. Normally a web host will provide you with a suite of tools to help design your site and give you easy access to features such as blogs, access stats and so on.

Depending on the context of 'webspace' determines what it means. 'A webspace' is somewhere a website resides (normally a web hosts computer), 'Webspace' is the amount of space a website takes up or the amount of space available for a website.

For example, I have a website with Yahoo (the web hosting company) and included with that package is 400Gb of webspace available for me to use but the webspace taken up by my site is about 10Gb.

Web space is where your web site is stored. It is an allocated amount of hard drive space (i.e. 50Mb), on your hosting company's web server.

WEb Hosting = The World Wide Web is a massive collection of web sites, all hosted on computers (called web servers) all over the world. The web server (computer) where your web site's html files, graphics, etc. reside is known as the web host. Web hosting clients simply upload their web sites to a shared (or dedicated) webserver, which the ISP maintains to ensure a constant, fast connection to the Internet.

Webspace and web hosting are quite similar

however the ones refered to as Webspace are usually free service provided by let say Yahoo/Geocities they 'host' your website(and or other files) for free without monthly or yearly payments unless extra services are requested and or expanded such as more MB space.

Same with web hosting, Making a Web site available on the Internet. Many ISPs host a few personal Web pages for an individual at no additional cost above the monthly service fee, but the address is subordinate to the ISP; for example, www.friendlyisp.com/pat_smith.

Multi-page, commercial Web sites are hosted at a very wide range of prices, and the customer's registered domain name is used. A single computer can hold dozens to hundreds of small Web sites, while a dedicated computer or multiple computers (from a handful to thousands) may be used for one large Web site.

Web hosting services also can be a dedicated server which mostly handles large amount of data for multiple users.

If you like to have a low cost web hosting, i would recomand you to use shared hosting and get 4 months free. This will be much more powerful than free hosting.

Shared Hosting

The shared web hosting is an inexpensive entry point for low traffic websites, running within the setup constraints of the standard accounts. As some sites expand, the shared hosting accounts become limiting.

Dedicated server

Performance - You are not sharing the system resources such as processor power, memory and disk space with other sites on the same server.

Greater Reliability - You do not run the risk of the server being slowed down, swamped with traffic, or crashed by another site on a shared server.

Security - As nobody else has access to the server you can be sure of having a much greater degree of security.

No. Well lets look at it this way. They company giving you free webhosting does bulk your website up with many things. Like in my case http://thetechhub.tripod.com/thetechhub/ is a website I made and given the fact it is on tripod I get many adverts on the screen. But then again you can direct more traffic to it and make some money from google ads.

You will have no control over what banners/advertisements and no control over where they are placed. That is the price you pay for free hosting. They will file for bankruptcy.

In other words-

There is a reason why there are no free domain names.

This is part of a debate I'm having. I don't think it makes and difference if I host a site locally or with a company 3000 miles away, but thought I'd check with the masses. Any thoughts?

Absolutely NO difference.

You can even host it at home IF your connection was fast enough to handle the traffic.

The only thing to look for in a hosting site is how fast a connection they have, and how much bandwidth per Month do they give you. What is there Up time. And of course Price and how reliable are they.

It wouldn't make a difference because the world wide web (the Internet) is virtually everywhere at the same time. Location does not matter.

But it all depends on which search engines you submit your site to. If you submit it to US search engines than your site will mostly be listed in US engines. If you want world wide than take the time to submit to all major search engines in alll the countries they offer their services.

I would start with Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

There are ways to make the search engine see your site more quickly or have it come up with greater preference when people search on the topic of your site, and it involves throwing the key terms on your site, sometimes hundreds of times even if its not visible on the web page itself. The short answer to your question is no, you will have to copy your website's files to your computer and then upload them to your new Yahoo hosting account. You can, however, leave your domain name hosted with 1%26amp;1 and simply point what's called its dns to your Yahoo web hosting account.

To answer your question in more detail, there are two parts to a website, the domain name and the actual hosted files. The domain name can be hosted with any web host that hosts domain names. For example, I am a real estate investor. Before I owned a web hosting company, I actually used Yahoo Web Hosting for my website. After starting my company, I moved my investing site's web hosting for the files (http://www.vegashouseflippers.com) to my company's web hosting but left my domain name - vegashouseflippers.com hosted with Yahoo.

So, the .html files and pictures are stored with eVentureBiz Web Hosting and the domain name is still with Yahoo. The domain name just points to my hosted files (called dns).

You could, of course, move both to Yahoo for just a little more cost.

The best machine for running a web server is either Linux or OpenBSD running Apache web server with a MySQL database and PHP scripting language to access MySQL (Often called a LAMP server).

Currently 75% of all (true) web servers run Apache on Linux or BSD.

As for what type of hardware you need, like Andrew said, that would depend on how busy you think the server will be. As with all things computer, the better the machine the better the application will run. I would suggest at least a Pentium 4 grade machine with 80 Gig hard drive, and 1 gig of RAM...

You should also consider something like Xen or VMWare which allows you to run multiple OS sessions at the same time and can be swapped between machines very easily.

I would be careful going with the cheapest company around. Make sure that the domain name is registered in your name and not the company that will be hosting the website for you. I would also look for any reviews available for the company. Some companies allow people to pay for hosting and then resell the hosting services. This could be fine, but if your website is how you make a living, and the reseller goes out of business, your site could go with them, and you would need to find another company to host your site.

There are a few specific, large companies that offer good pricing for domains and hosting and I don't see them going out of business. Personally, I use one that starts with a Yah and ends with oo. Their prices might not be the cheapest you can find, but I don't see them going out of business anytime soon, so I know my site will be safe with them.

If you area novice web designer then I agree with what most people say here, the client pays. In fact, I would not even disguise it in your prices, have them establish the service and then provide you the administrator/anonymous FTP access. I think the going rate for novice development of web pages in my area (Texas) is $50 per page. A web designer should get in and get out, which means no continuing requirements with web hosting fees. If, on the other hand, you are a web administrator, then you are talking more long term commitment. The only way I would suggest holding onto the hosting fees if you lease a presence on the web and sub-divide that presence among your clients. Many ISPs allow that and you collect the aggregate coin and pay the one flat rate to the ISP. It's up to you, but novice should stay simple.

Put it this way. If you were to fit a cable box for someone, would you have to pay their subscription?

Id give them the option of paying it to the hosting company, or directly to myself. If you are doing it for free, then no, get them to pay. But also tell them you will maintain the site as part of the deal, i do this for a year then charge them for further maintenance.

Reply:OK, you don't know what you have done. This is like asking which is the best OS. Mac, Linux, or Windows.

I use and prefer Windows 2000 AS, but I also host 2 sites with XP Pro simply using IIs.

If you are hosting a site that will get a couple of dozen hits a day then a DSL or cable service with W2k Pro or Windows XP Pro running Apachy will do just fine. Provided there are not downloading of files.

I receive 50 to70 hi a day over 4 sites from a home cable connection of 8Mbps\768Kbps.

Yahoo might be a little more then other web hosting services, but they are there 24/7, and you know they will be there in the future. The smaller operations might not be as highly capitalized and do not have the R %26amp; D that Yahoo has.

And as your needs change, they have the plans to work with you. The custom email service ($35- yr) is a great way to start.

ps: what ever service you use, buy the domain name for at least 5 yrs, you can "take it with you" where ever if you own it outright.
